THE ART GUYS COLOSSI
a proposal for the Houston Ship Channel
2015
gold plated bronze
585 feet tall
The Art Guys are pleased to announce their latest public art proposal: "The Art Guys Colossi."
The Art Guys Colossi are the world's largest statues of The Art Guys. Towering at 585 feet tall, the two gigantic exact likenesses of The Art Guys are 15 feet taller than the San Jacinto Monument, which is 15 feet taller than the Washington Monument.
Plated in pure 22 karat gold, the humongous rendering of The Art Guys serves as a glistening welcome beacon to oil tankers, canoers and canoeists arriving from all over the world.
Visitors to the soaring statues will be able to ride an elevator to the tops of the figures and peer out of windows in the eyes and ears.
At night, laser lights will beam futuristic rays from "The Art Guys Colossi" eyes forming a sci-fi arch for barges and sail boats to pass under.
Said Jack, "We think 'The Art Guys Colossi' shows Houston's unique can-do spirit."
"I guarantee that there's nothing quite like this anywhere," gleamed Mike.
Funding for "The Art Guys Colossi" will come from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In a surprising move, the MFAH Board of Directors decided to redirect the $1/2 billion they planned to spend on their new building for modern and contemporary art. An unnamed official from the MFAH said, "We think it's the right thing to do."
This is cool art piece. Definitely, Art Guys is coolest artist in the world!! This art piece reminds me "economy." Two golden business man having "suggesting" gesture and it feels like they are doing negotiation. I love the angle and color.
ReplyDeleteYes. This is just a Hypothetical Monument like the exercise we did in class but it is very absurd and I agree it relates to Speed Leveitch's gesture related to economy - and a port is definitely a place for that gesture.
DeleteThis project focuses on the environment and art in an incredibly unique way. At first I found the size to be particularly remarkable since it will be towering over the water channel, making it hard to miss by passerbys. The laser arch that will connect the two figures I found interesting in how it will connect with the environment, acting as an arch for the ships to sail under.I enjoy larger than life art so I think it is incredible and ambitious to be creating these large sculptures that not only interact with the environment but allow individuals to enter inside.
ReplyDeleteNathalie if youlike larger than life you also might enjoy this work by: Florentijn Hofman - also designed for and related to ports as a site-specific place for the sculpture to exist: https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/taiwan-giant-rubber-duck-deflates/index.html
DeleteArt Guys has been an inspiration of mine for this course. I used them for my hazmat suit piece and just to see the lengths and the questions they ask to lead up to the final presentation has been mind boggling. The functionality aspect due to location also reminds me of the anecdote of the jar and how it reinvents a space.

DeleteI mentioned Kenji Yanobe before to you Sharod but in terms of large kinectic sculptures involving protective suits... he is another artist. Also Lucy Orta: https://www.studio-orta.com/en/artwork/86/Refuge-Wear-Intervention-London-East-End-1998. https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2009/sep/30/artist-lucy-orta
I really enjoy the Art Guys work and what they come up with. This is a massive art proposal with the idea everything is bigger in Texas. This work would be amazing to see with the laser lights and the gold, I could only imagine waking up and seeing giant gold statues. The positioning of the statues give them a very life like feel like the iron giant.
ReplyDeleteHa. The Art Guys want to be bigin Texas. That is good Gwen. Here is a large-scale sculpture that did get made (in a different style). https://glasstire.com/2019/10/27/art-dirt-the-legacy-of-the-art-guys/
